The honest version of our history
A lot of providers claim a founding date that belongs to a company they bought. We would rather be precise about it, because the distinction is the whole business model.
The networks are old. The company is not. The copper in Wyoming and Montana was laid by independent telephone companies, some of it before the internet was a consumer product. The oldest exchange still carrying our customers was cut into service in 1994. The fixed-wireless sites across the Mountain West were built by regional operators through the 2000s and 2010s, by people who wanted broadband in places nobody was going to trench to. When we say “in service since 1994,” that is what we mean: the plant, the routes and in many cases the engineers.
N.E.T. — New Era Telecom — was formed in 2021 to buy those operators. The thesis was unglamorous: dozens of small providers across three regions had good plant, loyal customers and no capital to modernise, and were being sold off to buyers who would strip the local presence out within two years. We bought them and kept the local presence, because it is the only part that is genuinely hard to rebuild.
Between 2021 and 2024 we acquired operators in the United States, the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. The mix was deliberate — three regulatory regions, three sets of routes, and a group that can sell a customer connectivity on both sides of the Atlantic under one contract.
In 2025 the internet-provider business was separated out from the rest of the group and now trades as Net Inc., a Wyoming corporation, headquartered at 1309 Coffeen Ave in Sheridan. That is what this website is: the provider, not the holding company.
What we have added ourselves is the fiber. The build in Sheridan County is ours from the design outward — 2021 onward, still going, and the only part of the network where we can say we put it in the ground.
What we will and will not do
We will
- Publish every price and every fee on this website, where you can read them before you call.
- Send a representative to your address to survey it properly, at no charge, including when the answer turns out to be no.
- Tell you when a cheaper plan is the right one, and when Wi-Fi rather than bandwidth is your problem.
- Say clearly which parts of the network are ours and which ride partner infrastructure.
- Answer the support line ourselves, at any hour.
We will not
- Claim we have been serving your town since 1994 when what we mean is that we bought the company that was.
- Advertise a promotional rate that quietly doubles in month thirteen.
- Sell or broker your browsing history — not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone. See the privacy policy.
- Cap your data and call it unlimited.
- Name a customer to win your business, which is also why we will not name you.
Where the name comes from
The letters are the holding company: New Era Telecom. It was picked in 2021 and it was, frankly, a little grand for a business whose first asset was a copper exchange in northern Wyoming.
Everyone shortened it to NET within about a fortnight, which is what happens to an acronym that spells a real word. We stopped fighting it and put the periods in the logo instead. Customers call us Net, the paperwork says Net Inc., and the letters still stand for something.
What we do in the places we serve
- Free service to the public library and the senior centre in every community where we hold fiber.
- One $2,500 scholarship a year in each region, for a student going into a technical field.
- Second Saturday — a free help session at the Sheridan office, 9 to noon, monthly. Bring any device, ours or not. No charge, no appointment, no requirement to be a customer.
- A standing offer to any school in our footprint: if you are running a technology unit, one of our engineers will come and talk to the class.
